The Reifier

Steel, circuit boards, lights, misc. electronics components, wire, solder, hardware – 2024

The Reifier is a wearable interactive sculpture and electrical device. It works to “surmise” and “transcribe” its wearer’s inner emotions into a display of twenty lights, each light corresponding to a specific mood or desire. The accompanying Quick Lookup Guide provides information on each light’s associated meaning.

As the wearer speaks or moves their jaw, a button, which is adjusted to sit under their chin, is pressed. This activates The Reifier, displaying an output. This output can be read by a surrounding audience to “understand” the wearer’s state of being, relying on our ability to project our own, utterly meaningful “truths” onto structured, yet arbitrary information. There are 16 unique output states The Reifier can display, which are cycled through with each press of the button.

The Reifier uses no microcontrollers. Its circuitry is purpose built, making use of simple ICs and discrete components. It notably uses a technology called “core rope memory”, which allows programming of The Reifier through physical “weaving” of wires through magnetic cores.
