Wood, speaker, microphone, steel wire, Copper wire, electronics, audio amplifier – 2024

This conversation is a feedback loop.

The speaker converses with the microphone. The microphone is mounted to an articulating arm. Feedback occurs when they get close to each other. The speaker ejects the microphone when they make contact. Adjusting volume affects the intensity and speed of the chatter.

Commissioned audio piece to accompany A live performance for two dancers. Score was composed using sounds from household appliances and electrical devices. Performers reacted to the score with rigid and austere movements. Work directed by Katarina Poljak.

Steel, circuit boards, lights, misc. electronics components, wire, solder, hardware – 2024

(The Reifier relies on our tendency to project utterly meaningful assumed truths onto (conveniently) structured, arbitrary information.)

The Reifier is a scientific electrical device. It surmises and transcribes the inner emotions of whomever wears it into convenient and knowable words.

As the wearer speaks or moves their jaw, a button is pressed. This controls The Reifier, displaying an output with each press. This output can be used to understand the wearer’s state of being. each light corresponds to a specific mood or desire. The Quick Lookup Guide (below) diagrams each light’s associated meaning.

The Reifier uses no microcontrollers. Its circuitry is purpose built, making use of simple logic ICs and other discrete components. It uses a technology called core rope memory, which is a method of data storage that is programmed through the weaving of wires in and around magnetic cores.

Short film – 12:27 – 2023

Over the course of seven days, the “embodiment of roundness,” symbolized by the Drake Hotel, slowly collapses. The lauded inventor Ezekiel responds by offering his machine Rotubula, whose targeted gusts of wind are used to deflect the Drake’s falling debris. While seen as a savior, Ezekiel’s true motives are tied up in the interests of powerful elites, who intend to dismantle roundness in all its forms. These figures exploit the collapse in order to promote the distant, angular homes of the future—working to move society both aesthetically and morally towards squareness. Aid, who is a blind devotee of the powers, tries to assist in realizing this shift, only to be left confused and abandoned.

The script for Rotubula was written primarily as stream of consciousness. All visual effects were accomplished using standard definition video equipment. The entire process emphasized play and serendipity.

A sealed box which broadcasts the sound within itself. You can “tune into” last Fluesday on 94.7 FM.

Inspired by Duchamp’s With Hidden Noise (1916) and 50cc of Paris Air (1919).

All we’re allowed of Last Fluesday are the auditory and visual entrapments within this box, when it was last allowed to absorb the environment as it was; for it was then sealed with helical fasteners turned by a long and skinny rotator quite visibly angry.
